The Phoronix Test Suite is packed with 57 tests that have been grouped into 26 suites which range from audio-encoding to gaming performance. The suite is quite easy to use although you should make sure you have a few gigabytes of hard drive space free because it will need to download over 2GB if you want to run all of the tests.

I have recently begun to seriously think about replacing my Sansa e250R v2 with another portable player that actually has support for Ogg Vorbis.

I really like the Sansa overall because it has great battery life and does what it was designed to do rather well.

However, my music collection gradually moved completely to Ogg Vorbis over the past year and Rockbox does not support the v2 model so I am now forced to re-rip my music to MP3 format whenever I want to add something new to the player (which can be a bit of an annoyance at times).

I browsed through the Xiph.Org Foundation's Portable Players wiki page earlier and noticed that the Cowon iAUDIO 7 looks like it just might be an excellent replacement.

Does anyone have any hands on experience with the iAUDIO 7 or have something else they would personally recommend?

Instead of my browser window opening as it was supposed to do I was given a End-User Software License Agreement (EULA) screen which would not let me use Firefox until I agreed with the terms and conditions.

While Mozilla has had a EULA since Firefox 1.5 or so they have never brazenly shoved it into the end-user's face until now. It immediately set me on edge because this behavior is indicative of proprietary software and not something you would expect to see when using something that is open source.

As someone with a soft spot for out-dated hardware I have a tendency to acquire and fix unwanted machines so that they can be useful one again. My most recent project was definately no exception to the rule.

It was a filthy Apple //e Enhanced computer that had years of grime and some ball point pen markings tracing around its edges. Aside from that though it was in pretty good shape and I am fairly pleased at how well it cleaned up (even though I couldn't get some of the pen marks completely off of the case).

To make a long story short, after purchasing a Monitor //, 5.25" floppy drive, and a few other things it is now happily chugging along once again.

I'll mostly be using it for retro gaming and to connect to some of the Bulletin Board Systems that I frequent via a serial connection to one of my GNU/Linux machines. Of course the latter will have to wait a few days until the Super Serial Card that I bought comes in the mail. I would have added one already but I just couldn't bring myself to break the seal on the box containing my still 'new' Apple II Super Serial Card which I've had laying around.

It is a great feeling to bring new life into an old computer and also relive some of the finer moments of your youth at the same time. If you are interested in the specs of the Apple //e, you can see them on the "My Computers" page.

Now if you will excuse me.. Oregon Trail is calling. :)
