One year with the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard layout

I just realized that I have been using the Dvorak simplified keyboard layout for well over a year now. I am pleased to say that I love this layout and I could never see myself switching back to the standard Qwerty layout even though I am still fairly proficient with it.

It is a shame that the Dvorak layout has not had a larger adoption rate. In my experience the majority of people who make an attempt to learn it don't make it past the first week. People seem to think that their normal typing speed will return instantly and quit when it doesn't work out that way.

If you ever plan on making the switch you should make sure it is done when you have two weeks of free time to absolutely devote yourself to learning it with no distractions.

Are there any other Dvorak users within the reach of my humble blog?

Glhddh kjdod aod, err I mean
Indeed there are :)

Hah, I soon have vacation,

Hah, I soon have vacation, might try it then. Btw is your typing speed improved over qwerty yet, if so, how much approximately ? :)

Typing Speed

I would have to say that my typing speed appears to be about the same as it used to be (if not a bit faster than I was).

Tried it.

I tried the Dvorak layout about 7 years back, but since I did (and still do) a lot of help desk work on end user's machines, I found it very confusing to switch back and forth. In the end, I had to stay with the Qwerty layout.

Work Environment

That is completely understandable. I can see how it would be hard to learn and implement your usage of Dvorak in a corporate environment.

Of course!, I'm using it

Of course!, I'm using it since this summer (winter in your latitude). Now, I found to be a really interesting experience. Firsth, the accustomisation. Really ankward. Then, the little joys of becoming good at it (of course, before of this, the doubt, "Will I come back to thy ol' an good Qwerty?"). After that, the confusion of people trying to write on it =D (great security messure). Recently, I've discovered that it can be used like a weak, but quick, encryption method (write in Dvorak on a Qwerty layout or viceversa). And finally, I found fun to change from time to time between both of them.

In few word: I think is nice to keep oneself flexible, and this was a tricky, but really nice way to do it! ^^

Viva la Dvorak!

I want DSK

I've been trying for about a year now, but being underage I can't have a credit card and get my own, and my parents won't let me sabotage one of theirs.

Ask for your own keyboard

That is unfortunate.

I would discuss the benefits of Dvorak and see if they would be willing to at least buy you a cheap $10 keyboard so you can swap around the keys and learn without messing up one of their own keyboards.

Re: One year with the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard layout

Hi,

I've with Dvorak for sometime, here's my experiences:

I only wonder why I didn't switch to it from the beginning. It's great!

Hi, Mahesh. It is nice to meet another Dvorak user. :)
You have a decent article there and it should be fairly helpful to people starting out.
