I was roaming around one of my local electronics stores today and decided to purchase an Sandisk Sansa e250R MP3 player since I wanted a shiny new Rockbox powered player.
Unfortunately, after playing around with the e250R for a little while and being unable to patch the bootloader, I discovered that the hardware for the e200 series was recently modified and as a result Rockbox will not currently work on it.
I do not believe in returning perfectly functioning hardware so my plans for world domination installing Rockbox have been put on hold until they release a compatible version.
I figured I would let others know just in case they were planning on buying one as it seems the only way to know if you have a new model (at least in my experience) is a small 'v2' etched into the back of the actual unit because there was nothing on the box.

Comments
Same for me
Same for me: Nothing on the box, especially nothing about audible support. And I specifically put a comment in the order asking them to look if it's a v2!
Well, they way I unpacked it I don't think I can return it now :-| (which I would like to do).
"perfectly functioning" is relative - their firmware simply is crap.
Firmware
I have to agree that the firmware definitely has its quirks.
The most annoying ones I have found are in regards to fast forwarding through songs.
yup...........to fastforward
yup...........to fastforward it took so long to figure out that its best to use the >> key with the LOCK enabled.... then disengage Lock and it keeps in FF mode until play is started.
Re: Sandisk Sansa e200 v2 series MP3 player incompatible ...
If you are still hoping for the Rockbox, the developers seem to be forging ahead with it. Looking forward to seeing it if/when (now seems more like 'when') they get it fully functioning. I just bought another old e270 today, beat up and nasty. I would have bought a new one if only they had rockbox for it. Sansa should send some anonymous tips to the Rockbox devs.

Re: Sandisk Sansa e200 v2 series MP3 player incompatible ...
I've been watching the progress for some time now and things are definitely looking promising these days.
I can't wait to see a stable port because Rockbox will be the one thing that causes me to turn on my Sansa again. It has been sitting quietly on a shelf since I purchased my iAudio 7.
