Archlinux 2008.04-RC Quick Tour

The latest install images for Archlinux (2008.04-RC) were released today and I figured I would make a quick tour for it.

In this release grub launches instead of the CD dropping you to a boot: prompt. The grub menu gives you a multitude of choices and I have to say that this simple change will really make a good first impression for first time users.

Is GNU/Linux the only operating system that you use?

Linux User Group Hell

I discovered that there was a local Linux User Group which was meeting once a month at a college not far from my house and I decided to stop by at their last meeting so that I could meet fellow GNU/Linux enthusiasts.

I guess I had my expectations set too high because I figured that since it was at a college I would be able to meet people around my own age group and there would be some some real interest in the operating system with possible distribution, configuration, and general discussion.

I brought my laptop along since I anticipated that was what the members would be doing.

Unfortunately, it turned out that 99.9% of the people attending the LUG appeared to be in their fifties and they thought it was funny that I actually brought my Slackware powered laptop to their LUG since the classroom they were in was outfitted with Windows XP machines (which they figured was just perfect).

The Linux Foundation's New Podcast Series

The Linux Foundation has launched a podcast series that will feature interviews with various leaders of the open source movement. Their first podcast which is the first half of a two part interview features Linus Torvalds.

I have to say that their first podcast was pretty decent overall. The only very sight gripe I have is that the interviewer sounds like he is sitting in a small room away from the microphone.

If you don't have time to listen, they have been kind enough to provide a transcript of the interview.

Hello Zsh

Every so often I get an impulsive desire to try something new and yesterday morning was no different.

While sitting at the computer and catching up on my RSS feeds I decided it was time to take zsh for a spin and thus my adventure for the day had begun.

To be honest, I had thought about trying zsh once before but I didn't bother in the end because I have always been somewhat of a bash devotee. Up until now bash was the only shell I have used since the Red Hat 5.x days.
